The Keenan McKenzie Jazz Combo
is composed of some of the most talented jazz musicians in North Carolina. With Joseph Dickey on bass, Daniel Faust on drums, Keenan McKenzie on winds, Andrew Shillito on guitar and Katie Spaan on Vocals, each member has unique experience in genres such as blues, rock and roll, folk, funk, hip hop, and more. These individuals have previously performed with artists such as Delfeayo Marsalis, Natalie Cole, Seamus Blake, Fantasia Barrino, and Max Weinberg. They have appeared in groups at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola at the Lincoln Center in New York, and the House of Blues in New Orleans. As experts in an art form based largely in improvisation, the group is highly versatile and can adapt to fit almost any situation. The Keenan McKenzie Jazz Combo specializes in classic jazz, and plays recognizable and accessible melodies from composers like Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, and Gershwin.

The Keenan McKenzie Jazz Combo can provide music for a wide range of occasions, including weddings, parties, dinners, family gatherings, and dances. The group is available in arrangements ranging from a duo up to a full five-piece band with vocals.

Katie Spaan was born and raised in Southern California, where she began singing at age ten.  She studied Pop/R&B-style singing with Billy Purnell for five years before relocating to Greensboro, NC in 2006.  In spring 2009, she was awarded first place at the state-level classical competition of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. She placed second at the southeastern regional-level.  Katie is currently a student at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she studies with Nancy Walker. She also serves as the co-director of Seraphim, UNCG’s all-female Christian a cappella group.

Daniel Faust is a versatile, in-demand drummer from Greensboro, NC. In addition to playing with the award-winning UNCG Jazz Ensemble and various small jazz groups, Faust has extensive experience playing professionally in pit orchestras for musicals, in various church settings, and with The Soul Brothers, a James Brown tribute band that performs all over the southeast. He was also recently selected to compete in the Bucharest International Jazz Competition.

Andrew Shillito began instruction in classical guitar at the age of 9 in his home in Carrboro, NC.  Gradually he became interested in other styles of music including Rock, Funk, and the Blues. One of the most sought-after musicians in the area, Shillito has performed with a variety of world class musicians, including saxophonist Ralph Bowen and bassist Steve Haines. Recently, he performed with saxophonist Chad Eby in the North American Saxophone Alliance biennial conference in Athens, Georgia.

Joseph Dickey, of Roanoke VA, is a bassist well-versed in both jazz and classical. He was recently selected to compete in the Bucharest International Jazz Competition. A member of the UNCG Jazz Ensemble, Joseph has professional experience in both his home town and the Triad Area, playing at music festivals, restaurants, hotels, weddings, and private parties. Originally a guitarist, his switch to bass is what first peaked his interest in jazz.
